When planning what to place in storage either for personal or business purposes, you need to consider what storage facility to use. Self-storage facilities have constraints on what they can and cannot store, and they need to adhere to these rules and restrictions. Items that are not allowed in self-storage facilities include:
Of course, anything perishable may attract unwanted pests and rodents and can spoil the storage unit. Perishables include food (sealed or not) for animals and humans. Things like cereal, boxed food, canned or jarred items are not allowed.
Illegal items are not acceptable in self-storages. This list of articles includes unlicensed firearms, illicit drugs, or any stolen goods. Self-storage units are subject to searches by the facility manager after a few days, weeks or months, depending on the policy or customer demands. If any illegal items are found, the site supervisor can alert the police.
Toxic or Flammable Items
Anything flammable or toxic can be hazardous or potentially dangerous in the storage unit and the surroundings. Things like paints, aerosols, fuel, thinners or cleaning fluids are prohibited from the storage unit. These things can cause a dangerous situation; they need to be avoided at all cost. Other items such as acids, corrosive items, fertilizer fireworks or any ammunition are not allowed in the self-storages.
Scented items can be stored in self-storage, but those with strong smell are not acceptable as they may attract pest and mice. Anything that gives off strong scents such as perfumes, soap, candles, and other toiletries are not recommended to be placed in storage. The fact that some scented products are manufactured using flammable substances is another reason why they are not accepted.
Medical Supplies and Equipment
While most medical supplies can be stored in self-storages, radioactive equipment cannot be stored in these storages, anything that contains radioactive materials is prohibited from the storages.
Miscellaneous Prohibited Items
Anything alive or dead, animal or plant cannot be stored. Other items like equipment used to locate underground water or the use of generator, refrigerators, or space heaters are all prohibited.
Self-storage units offer storages for only the thing that are allowed, but for prohibited items, they can’t offer you their services.
